Burntburh: B1R - Shrill Cliffs

B1R - Shrill Cliffs

Open grasslands overlooking the Short Sea. You can find wild goats roaming here, along with shrills and other sea birds roosting on the cliffs and burrows dug in the soft ground. The wind is quite fierce here as it cuts unobstructed across the land, tussling the short cropped shrubs and flowers.

[Warped perception - First time viewing the Short Sea causes d6 CLA loss]

[At night you can always smell smoke, and have a 50% chance of fog]

Shrill flocks - Hazard

Shrills nest along the cliffs all year round, and hunt for food along these grasslands. Their calls are incredibly loud and disorientating. Flocks of them will shriek at each other nonstop as they fly around. Anyone passing through this area will encounter their headache inducing chatter, losing d4 VIG & d4 CLA without suitable protection.

Horses are particularly sensitive to the noise, and can bolt from the sudden noise of these birds. Any travelling close to the cliff edge will need to be extra careful and may need to make a save to keep them from running right off the edge.

Chain ladders - Hidden Location [Can only find on a wilderness roll of 6]

A small collection of conspicuous boulders near the cliff's edge have a hidden secret. Firmly attached to them are three separate chains hanging down the entire 700 foot drop to the sea below. Each chain is about three feet apart from each other. The chain passes over a series of small natural ledges near the bottom but its tail fully descends into the sea itself.

The chain itself is made of some sort of green tinged metal and each link is around two feet long. Although not immediately obvious, the chain is entirely indestructible.

The size and weight of the chain keeps it from moving, allowing anyone daring enough to climb using it. Climbing down causes you to lose 1 VIG, and climbing up causes you to lose d4 VIG. If you are free climbing and taking no precautions to secure yourself from falling then you also need to make a VIG save to see if you fall at any point.

What can you find here?

  1. Plant ingredients - many different wild plants and flowers bloom throughout the year here that can be used in herbal remedies. Despite being plentiful, you will need an expert to identify them and their uses.

  2. Wild berries - often small, hard and bitter, but some are pleasant and are added for flavouring to other fruit jams. Although equally a number of poisonous varieties grow here, best to bring a guide.

  3. Eggs and feathers - sea birds often join the many ground birds that flit amongst the plants whilst high above birds of prey hover looking for a meal. As such it's trivially easy to find some pretty feathers here, and depending on breeding seasons you can likely find some eggs.

  4. Elf arrows - small flint arrows crafted by the fae can be found here, when carried they can protect from hags and curses.

  5. Star jelly - strange gelatinous blobs fall from the stars here, it can be used to make potions, although witches can craft baleful poisons from it too.

  6. Manticore quills - long metal grey quills with a strange green tinge can very rarely be found here, thought to have been shot from manticore tails. They are between 6 to 8 inches long and despite being very thin no tool seems to be able to bend or break them - making them quite practical in a variety of uses. Some are used as nails, believed to prevent aggression and murder inside any wooden structure which has one driven into it. Others have repurposed them into wicked daggers, the wounds of which are said to carry foul poison.
